Paper wraps as packaging for Roularta Media Group

Packaging solutions:

Paper: a sustainable alternative to plastic packaging

Environmentally conscious publishers and marketers are increasingly moving away from plastic film due to its environmental impact. Paper wraps offer a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative.

Group Joos is a pioneer in supplying roll-based paper wraps for industrial applications. Roularta Media Group, for example, has chosen printed paper wraps from Group Joos to distribute its magazines.

Roularta has replaced plastic packaging for titles such as Libelle with a sustainable alternative. Belgium’s magazine with the largest readership is now delivered to subscribers in a recyclable paper wrap — no more plastic film.

For Roularta, this represents a major step forward in its sustainability ambitions. Each edition now saves up to 30 kilometres of plastic film.

Paper wraps are a sustainable and future-proof solution for publishers and marketers looking to reduce their environmental footprint.

Roularta employees share their experiences

Margaux Vandamme, Brand Manager Libelle:
“Sustainability is very important for Libelle. For years, we have been giving our readers tips on how to live more sustainably. This year, we also looked at how we could make the product itself more sustainable. The paper wrap emerged as the solution.”

Stephanie Slabinck, B2B Corporate Communication Manager:
“We consider sustainability to be very important at Libelle. For many years, we have been giving our readers tips on how to live more sustainably. This year, we also explored how we could make the product itself more sustainable. The paper wrap emerged as the solution.”

Ann Feys, Cross-media Project Coordinator:
“Together with Group Joos, we looked for the right type of paper for the paper wrap. It had to be strong enough to protect the magazines properly, but also light enough to keep the content visible for the reader. Group Joos prints the paper wraps and delivers them to us. We then ensure that Libelle or Trends is wrapped in the paper wrap and sent to subscribers.”

Advantages of paper wraps

Bart Goos, Manager Finishing & Logistics Printing:
“Packaging magazines in paper wrap results in shorter setup times, a consistent production process, less waste and fewer downtimes. With one set of parameters, we can process all paper qualities of the paper wrap. The gluing of the paper wrap is a constant process, which reduces the risk of glue ending up on the cover and damaging it when opening the packaging.”

From obligation to opportunity

Stephanie Slabinck:
“Roularta will increasingly phase out plastic film and replace it with sustainable alternatives such as the paper wrap. This is not only an obligation, but also a dual opportunity. On the one hand, our editorial teams can express their creative ideas on the paper wraps, which adds value for readers. On the other hand, the paper wrap offers a commercial channel where advertisers can communicate their message”

Branding

Joachim De GeyterMedia Expert Automotive & Transport, Energy, Industry, NGO & Political Parties at Roularta:
“Today, many advertisers focus on sustainability. The paper wrap offers an ecological alternative to plastic. With the paper wrap, advertisers can further emphasize their sustainable initiatives.”

Margaux Vandamme:
“From a marketing perspective, we also use the paper wrap as a very useful tool to communicate additional messages to our readers. For example, at the launch we printed a happiness list on the paper wrap, where readers could write down the small moments that made them happy at that time.”

From research to AMMA Award

Joachim De Geyter:
“We conducted market research among more than 3,200 of our readers, and what did we find? Nine out of ten noticed the paper wrap, which is logical given its strong stopping power. Moreover, we found it very interesting that no less than 86% of our readers perceived the paper wrap as very positive. It was also seen as highly innovative and sustainable. At Roularta, we are therefore proud to have recently won an AMMA Award for our sustainable initiatives, including the paper wrap!”
